Project manage in Agile

Postby ashwineec Sat Mar 04, 2017 7:32 am

I have read some confltcing references .
In Agile (no scrum) Project manager takes responsibility of risk management.
In Agile (scrum/no scrum) team is responsible for performance management.

In traditional world PM does performance analysis and monitoring and in Agile team is responsible for that ..
Why same rule of risk management not applied to performance management which is not directly creating value tasks?
If team is self managed why they cant do risk management on their own why PM needed there?

What makes you think PM is doing Risk Management in Scrum. As you said when we do not have role called PM in scrum how can PM does it. The scrum guide fines what is Scrum and it does not tell you what you should do to manage Risk, it leaves on you.

Now the problem is PMI-ACP is not just Scrum exam, it is generic Agile and we do not have any specific body of knowledge to validate it. In some of the books of PMI-ACP exam they do recognize the role of project manager and in some context this role can do even risk management, so please be objective about the question you answer or see .

Probably question is not formuated in good way :) Sorry about that.
Actually confusion is in agile world, emphsize is on making team self organized which can manage its work, monitor performance etc..

What would be PM responsibilities in this case when team is self sufficient?

In some of the references I read that PM manages external world communication, risk managemennt etc.

So I was wondering as team is self organized, it is intended that they do everything that is needed for delivery. In such cases do we really need role like PM in agile world.

How things work in practice?

Yes PM or any Leader attached to Agile Teams can help team to take care of things which they can not take care. Many time working with external people for getting things done is left on Project Manager kind of person. I see in most of the Indian IT companies we do have Project Manager in Agile , and this project manager is more like an account manager who takes care of billing , resourcing , client escalations and non technical risks . May be some day companies can create teams where they can live without Manager

Here is my talk on Agile Leadership , and we can map Leader to Project Manager.
