A new discovery in field of science can now enable a drug manufacturing organization to optimize its drug testing phase resulting in huge saving. CEO asks functional manager to evaluate feasibility and define business case. You are on good books of functional manager and have delivered several critical projects. Functional manager is in process of defining business case and drafting project charter. He informs you that you will be assigned as PM once the charter is approved, and asks your help in drafting project charter and collecting data for business case approval. You are willing to help but you are not sure if this activity is ideally in project boundary. What is not true about project boundary?
Approval and funding are handled outside project boundary
Business case is handled inside project boundary
Project boundary is defined as a point in time at which the start or completion of the project or project phase is authorized
Project team can help in defining project charter but the activity will be outside project boundary definition

Re: Question on Project Boundaries
Business case is handled inside project boundary. --not true.
once business need identified and cost benefit analysis done functional manager / executives are documented the business case in the project charter.
project charter formally authorizes the project and provides the authority to project manager.
therefore Business case is defined before project start.

Project team can help in defining project charter but the activity will be outside project boundary definition.
This statement seem not true also as the development of project charter is under the project boundary as well and Project Manager being a part of project team can contribute in the development of charter. Please clarify?

Project charter creation is primary responsibility of Project Sponsor and PM can help, it is not PMs responsibility though
Re: Question on Project Boundaries
Manish Thanks, But the question is not asking the responsibility. It is asking the activities which are done while developing the project charter are inside the project boundaries or not?
While as per PMBOK Development of Project Charter in a process within the Project Process Groups.
