XP Roles

Postby anilkro Thu Jun 16, 2016 7:54 am

Hi,

From PMI-ACP perspective, XP roles are 1) Coach 2) Customer 3)Programmer 4)Tester and 5) Tracker.

I sense couple of questions

What is role of Project manager in XP?

My understanding is , if project manager is "Agile expert/Practitioner" he can act as coach.

and he can guide "Customer" + "Programmer" + "Tester" in following Agile Practices.( Can act as Shepard, bulldozer...)

He can support PO in facilitating the Product Back Log"

Facilitator of daily stand-ups/reviews/retrospective(He manages principles NOT team, observes ground-rules).. all..

Updater of Information Radiators to make sure that they are up to date( as Tracker).

so PM does multiple jobs of XP roles :)

could you share your thoughts

Hi,

you can off-course manipulate with tittles in XP team. however, so far recommendations on roles from makers of XP doesn't talk about need of project manager.
because more or less its been taken care by coach.

refer this link, i think it will add more perspectives to your findings on XP roles.

We have small classroom video on XP Roles in our content, i hope you have seen that.

The Art of Agile Development (Which was earlier one of the reference book ) does talk about Project Manager
The project manager
Project managers help the team work with the rest of the organization. They are usually good at coaching
nonprogramming practices. Some functional managers fit into this role as well. However, most project
managers lack the technical expertise to coach XP’s programming practices, which necessitates the
assistance of a programmer-coach.
Project managers may also double as customers.
