Change Log, Issue log & Change Request

Postby mehtasahilc Fri Jan 08, 2016 6:06 am

1. Can anyone explain the exact difference between Change Request & Change log ?

2. Definition of "Manage Stakeholder engagement" - Communicating and working with stakeholders to meet their needs and address any issues as they occur in the project

From the definition it can be said that PM also solve issues if any.
then why Issue Log is not used as Input to "Manage Stakeholder engagement" ?

1. If we want any change, we raise change request but after a change request is approved or rejected, result is documented in change log.
2.If any issues are observed in manage stakeholder engagement, it is documented in issue log(outout of the process). Issue log is then used as input in control stakeholder engagement process to resolve them.

Change request is the formal request made to the CCB to approve any changes from the approved plan.
Once the request is made to the CCB it will be updated in the change log document even if it is approved or rejected for future tracking purpose(with the details).
In simple terms change log is the document for tracking the change requests.

Change Request: A formal proposal to modify any document, deliverable, or baseline.

Change Log: A comprehensive list of changes made during the project. This typically includes dates of the change and impacts in terms of time, cost, and risk.

Issue Log: A project document used to document and monitor elements under discussion or in dispute between project stakeholders.

Some project stakeholders request information about an approved change request . What should the project manager do?

1. schedule a meeting
2. update the communication plan
3. report periodic changes to the stakeholders
4. update the change log

So,an issue log might trigger a CR,which in turn would updated change log...right?

Hi skm,I think the answer to the question would be option D.

However, option B also seems like a close contender.

What differentiates a communication management plan ( which is the central to communication in a project) vs a change/issue log, when it comes to communicating updates/changes to stakeholders?

Pls advise

Option D is the correct answer, I guess! Approved Change request which is approved by change control board (CCB) to be incorporated in the change log. If stakeholder asked for the information, they can be referred to Change log where approved change request is noted.
stakeholders concerns are recorded in the issue log which is an output of manage stakeholder engagement and input of control stakeholder engagement, manage project team and control communication.

Thanks for the reply. i have one more question

Key stakeholder claims the budget deviations happened without approval. if deviations did happen what can be used as evidence of the approvals?
1. project charter (or) change request

I think budget deviations happened post approving formally can be traced through Change log and those that are not approved formally could be traced through issue logs.

Change log would also give a list of rejected CRs submitted for approval with reasons codes for rejection by CCB.
