Time mgmt: qts

Postby dipti5ece Tue Mar 24, 2015 2:36 pm

Hi,

in Rita I read that we dont identify the company calendar working and non working days in Estimate activity durations- its not an action involved here

whereas it is done while developing schedule.

Why is it not done in estimate activity durations.? because the company calendar working -non working may affect the project dates...?

Correct! Let me try to explain this in layman language.... let's assume that you have an activity B, which may take 5 days to complete as per your estimates. Now remember you do Sequence Activities before developing a project schedule. Now assume while developing schedule this activity B starts from Wednesday of calender dates in sequence. In case if we do not consider the week offs (Saturday and Sunday) the activity should finish on Sunday (Wed+5 days). This is ideally not the case in real world and we need to skip these two as no work day, which brings activity B completing on Tuesday.

In develop schedule you need to consider actual working days to conclude the real project schedule. You also need to consider other company holidays in developing schedule.

Hope this makes sense!

There is no term as company calendar in PMBOK.
Resource calendar (which indicates working days/hours of resources) already does incorporate organization holidays in general.
Resource calendar is an input to estimate activity. So if you already know which resources will be working on particular activity (output of estimate activity resources process which is pre requisite to estimate activity duration) you can determine how long (calendar days) the resource will take to finish his/her activity.

In developing schedule you need to take into consideration the dependencies across all activities within and probably outside project and hence you need to consider organizations calendar as well.

e.g

In Europe you have concept of summer vacation for month. Resource working on your project may not take vacation in summer but if there are dependencies on other activities outside project and that resource is on leave in summer month you need to consider that before deriving your project schedule network diagram

Correct there is no term like Company Calender as per the PMBOK, we should be using the correct terminology, which is Resource Calender! Thanks for pointing that! :D :D :D
