change request

Postby AM1969 Mon Mar 23, 2015 8:41 pm

The marketing head of your company raised an issue that he is not being kept in loop about the change in release date of project, you looked at Project Communication Management Plan and found that he is not included in the list of stakeholders who gets an update related to project schedule variances. You feel that marketing head should be included in schedule related communications, what should you do next?

Include Marketing head in all future schedule related communications

Update the Communication Management Plan

Raise a Change Request

Tell marketing head that he can anytime call you and get the desired information

......................
In some answers option is to raise a change request and somewhere answer is to update communication mgt plan.
Please clarify

Usually updating project communication plan for addition of key stakeholders to receive project status update (Unless its sensitive and restricted information) does not necessitate a formal Change request process.

Communication management plan is update with revised version

you can refer to PMBOK page 307 and 308.

Depending upon the stakeholder type and information being sensitive or not or right information being shared with right stakeholder, PM can decide on updating communication plan and or for that matter stakeholder management plan. In this scenario I do not see any issues in updating directly communication management plan instead of raising a change request.

this would not require a CR ..also this is not affecting any other project constraints.

So I think we can update the comm plan.

Which we do not agree with. What is the source of question?

I think PM can directly go and update the communication management plan and do not need a CR for this.

In PMBOK 308, it is mentioned that control communication can result in communication plan update.

"Control Communications process may trigger updates to the communications management plan as well as
other components of the project management plan (e.g. stakeholders and human resource management plans)."

I hope the thread i shared answers it, and we do not have any rule which says raise the change request or not raise it. PMBOK use may for both the case, and what you do, you do as per your change management plan, in exam look for options and pick the one which is safest.

Please discuss quampus questions in exclusive area it helps us in linking with other threads.

sharing the comment from thread here again
Many time this becomes confusing related to some of the project documents and project management plan

1. Its not necessary to follow change request for all project plan and project document update, and that is the reason many processes gives output of update project document and update project management plan.

2. We need to define in Change Management Plan about which all documents / plans gets updated only via formal change management process.

3. In general if something has to do with time, cost and scope it goes via formal change management process.
