Projectized or Matrix Organization

Postby kniraj Wed Dec 24, 2014 4:19 pm

You are managing a complex project which requires some highly skilled resources on embedded design. You obtain these resources from the organization pool specifying the duration for which they would be required. Once your project activity is complete you need to free these resources for reassignment. You are working in which kind of organization structure?
• Functional
• Projectized
• Matrix
• Tight Matrix

I think this is a projectized organiation ... but the site says Matrix .. please share your views

It should be Matrix Organization only!

• Functional
Functional organizations has different functional areas (Financial, operations, marketing etc) and projects are done with in the team or department. Even the communications mostly remains with in the team and any external is communicated from one functional head to another head.

• Projectized
Means the whole organization is projectized. PM has control of project and when project is complete teams goes nowhere rather assigned to new projects.

• Matrix
In such type of organization the team goes back to their normal work once the project is done. Normally they are responsible for daily routine work as well as the project they are assigned for.
In these types organization both PM and functional and project manager enjoys the power depending upon of type of matrix.
Strong Matrix: PM enjoys power over Functional Manager,
Weak Matrix: Functional Manager has more authority then PM. PM in this case works as project coordinator or project expediter.
Balance Matrix: Both enjoy the similar power.

• Tight Matrix
There is no such type of organization and term is used more of "colocation" (Placed at one place) of team to have better control.

The question says that the resources have come from a pool of resources and will be released for reassignment. To me both seem to be projectized organization. In a matrix, the resources would come from different functional areas and will go back to their own functional areas or for that matter they remain and continue to do their functional work after the project or during the project.

Any other views from the members.

Okay so the confusion is with projectized organization and with resources going back for newer assignments.

Few things about the projectized org:
1. Entire company is organized with the different projects and PM and PMO has maximum power.
2. Resources working in project are reporting directly to PM.
3, Once project is complete, there is no department for them to return back. They just wait for new assignments!

The case in question is more appropriate for STRONG MATRIX, wherein PM requests for specialized people working for him for time being in project and these specialized people may be from manufacturing, IT, DATA BASE, Financial consultants etc (pool of resources), who have their own department and boss (functional head). They may report PM for the time being till the time their part gets completed and later get back to their home. So yes in my understanding it is a case of Matrix org.

On the answer, agree with pank_pmp.

To support bit more, taken the Real-world scenario of a projectized org explained from Kim Heldman's book.
"You've been appointed project manager for your company's website design and implementation. You're working in a projectized organization, so you have the authority to acquire and assign resources."

In the current context of the question, PM is taking the resource with a request on the hours and then the point of reassignment is mentioned. These points include Functional Manager is involved. And that can happen in a Matrix Type. Functional is out of the question, since PM's role is very minimal.

Related to strong matrix, I am not very sure. At this moment it can Balanced matrix as well. Some more info is required to decide between which type of matrix is this org now.
