Dear Team - Have confusion on the below question :

Question : Your are the seller in a software development project. The project work is underway when you discover the client is going to make a major change. This chance will dramatically alter the software requirements. What is the best thing to do ?

1 - Stop work on the software and await instruction.
2 - Ask the client when the change will be finalized and manage the project accordingly.
3 - Stop work on parts of the project that will not change.
4 - Inform the client of the impact on the project of making such change.

As the question says, the those are future changes and currently have no clarity on the impact on the constraints as well, it can increase or decrease the scope and might be the situation where it does not align to the charter, this Option 2 seems correct where once the changes are finalized, it shall go through ICC process, but Option 4 is marked as correct with the explanation that :

Sellers are generally required under contract to keep working unless told otherwise. It is best to inform the client of the impact the change will have on the project, so they can consider their options.

This Question is from Rita PMFastrack V8.

Option # 4 - Inform the client of the impact on the project of making such change.

As a PM , the major change needs to be evaluated/assessed for impact on the Project. Then it has to be brought to the notice of the Change requester , in this case the Client. If he/she agrees/accepts the possible outcome of the impacts (scope , cost , quality , risk etc) , then a formal Change request has to be made to the CCB.

This is my understanding in this particular case.

Hi Ranjit - Thanks for the reply, but the question says that the changes shall come in future ( The project work is underway when you discover the client is going to make a major change.) i.e for now the information is not formally communicated to PM at this point of time, thus my understanding was, if we don't have the clarity on the requirement and on the impact at this point of time as nothing has been evaluated, is it not appropriate to convey that the changes shall be taken care as per ICC process once we have the understanding on the requirement rather than sharing the impact based on assumptions / incomplete understanding on what changes desired ?

Here the trigger word is the "DISCOVER" , that means the PM has got sufficient details about the change !!!

Hi Amit,

As it says you have discovered that there can be potential changes, hence its best to Inform the client of the impact on the project of making such change. So as to enable him to think further whether or not to request for the change and if requested to be aware of the change in Cost and Schedule of the project.
