Product Backlog

Postby seema.sonkiya Thu Oct 18, 2018 6:13 am

Got the following question

I was going through the PMI ACP online video courses.
Under Scrum in the Scrum Artifacts: Product Backlog video it is mentioned that product backlog should have an estimation for each item.

Product backlog is a collection of requirements, be it Large, Big, Medium or Small and a live artifact. Team will pickup only the top priority items of product backlog. Team is looking only to part of the product backlog which are important for next 2-3 sprints.

In video it is mentioned team do the estimation of product backlog and product owner may challenge them. Question is If requirements are not clear how team will do the estimation? Why team will do estimation when they do not certain item will be picked for development or not.

In a sprint when this activity happens and how often?

Product Backlog is an ordered list where higher priorities items come at first. Items are detailed appropriately means top items are small in size and items which are at the bottom are big in size and mostly at the epic level.

Also, the estimation is mainly done based on the size of the work. So if size is big then, of course, it takes uncertainties in it, and when we move these items up we decompose them and again estimate them in smaller units. Estimation in smaller units, means fewer uncertainties are there.

Mainly relative estimation is done which is easy and fast to estimate. Product Owner challenges when he feels that the team has not taken all aspects into consideration while estimation. Also, estimation is done based on what is known.

Decomposing big items in small is one of the works of product backlog grooming and based on need PO calls product backlog grooming session. As per Scrum Guide, approx 10% of sprint time goes in product backlog grooming.
