Query on User Story

Postby balasg1984 Sat Sep 03, 2016 10:55 am

When is a user story (or feature) usually estimated by a Scrum team?

A) A user story is estimated at the beginning of the project.

B) A user story is estimated as soon as it is created.

C) A user story is estimated right after its elaboration, close to execution in a Sprint.

D) A user story does not need to be estimated in a Scrum environment.

Anwer is C --> A user story is estimated right after its elaboration, close to execution in a Sprint.

Just having query as why not the answer be A) which is estimated at the beginning of the project.

Reason being - Product backlog gets estimated with story points using planning poker and this activity is also done by keeping the scrum team involved.

Can anyone please clarify?

Answer is vague(or I don't understand correctly). Let me put my understanding across.

D is ruled out.

A is not correct, but not by "SCRUM TEAM", here TEAM is the key word. At the beginning of the project "SCRUM TEAM" don't involve in estimation.

B also not correct, because once it is created we need not know about priroties, values/risks. Because Uster stories can also be created at the release level.

C looks better, as the team is involved in estimation(need not be planning poker, can be Wideband Delphi, affinit, T-shirt etc). C is the last responsible
moment.
