Contigency & Mitigation

Everytime I am getting confused with Contigency & Mitigation plan. Can you please explain me in simple words, as well please tell me the example which you gave regarding .. Carrying Umbrella if you see cloud...this is which plan...and if it raise standing below shade is which plan?

I am writing a detailed blog on this topic.... the quick reply is :

Carrying and Umbrella is : Mitigation plan since you are doing advance planning.

Using the shades are Contingency... so when you see some drops of rain you take the shades , this is Contingency plan.

I am sure Saket explains better. Here are my 2 cents

Mitigation -> is what you plan to cover when the risk occurs (carrying an umbrella if it rains... if it doesnt.. does not matter)
Contingency -> is what you quickly have to do (thats also plan btw) when the risk is triggered already. In this case, there is no way you can escape, you should try to cover somehow. (when the rain drops... you take a shelter or borrow the umbrella)
Contains -> you get wet in the rain as you have not planned anything
Avoid -> don't even go out
