ESTIMATING VELOCITY

Postby Rajkumar Nair Tue Feb 12, 2019 6:45 am

Dear Seema ,

This is a question by comparing the two chapters :
Chapter 8 - Estimation & Chapter 10 - Release Planning

Chapter 8 - Estimation : When we are doing Estimation we calculate velocity ( slide 7 - we have put velocity = 20 )

Chapter 10 - Release Planning : when we are Estimating velocity we use 3 methods to ( Slide 16 - use historic value , run an iteration , make forecast )

Question :

1. Are we using these 3 methods for Estimating a velocity only during Release Plan or We use these 3 methods for Estimating a velocity During Estimation Also ?

I did not get your question. What is the difference in getting an idea during estimation or release planning?

Dear Seema ,

The Idea is same only...

In the Estimation chapter video it is said that effort and duration is normalized inside the velocity factor...There is no mention of how to calculate velocity during estimation...

In the Agile planning chapter video it is said that to calculate velocity we need to use any of these 3 methods ( Slide 16 - use historic value , run an iteration , make forecast )

My question is :

1. Do we need to follow the same 3 method when we calculate velocity during estimation ?
2. If we have already estimating velocity during estimation itself , why we need to estimate the velocity again in Release planning ?

I have made a order of planning as below during speculation phase :

Create a Candidate Feature List
Create a USER STORY
Estimating USER STORY
Prioritizing USER STORY
Creating PB
Creating STORYMAP
Create RELEASE PLAN
Create Roadmap from the collection of storymaps....

I am asking this question on the basis of this order only...Please let me know if this order of planning sequence is correct ?

You use the method which is most suitable. Like, when you start, you can rely on the historic velocity with the same team. In case there is no historical data for the same team, then run an iteration can work.

As we move, we learn the velocity which is emerging then we can estimate it.

Velocity is not baselined, it is emerged based on learning.

A Roadmap is top-level planning, it is the vision of the product, and without vision, nothing can be started. It is updated time to time-based on changes.

Creating, estimating and prioritizing can be done at the same in the same workshop. And at the same time, you can put it in the product backlog. The release plan is done initially and time to time update based on changes.
