Are sub stories of Epic mapped as child stories of parent Epic story?

Let's say i have an Epic and that Epic has 5 sliced stories. Now should i have to create those 5 sub stories as child stories for Epic story or that can be created as separate stories where there is no dependencies b/w parent Epic and sub stories?

Theme are not actually stories

I think Themes are not the stories actually. That is a keyword used to group the sub stories (that are delivering a Epic) and this keyword is mainly used for management for tracking a Epic. is that correct?
